California has been treating us well this year.... we've been a bit MIA in the internet world but we've been getting it done.

Here is a few snaps from a pipe shoot we had at June Mountain yesterday.... and by the way June is one of our favorite resorts hands down. Amazing park, perfect pipe, never crowded, powder stashes for days... get there.

I (bhayes) met up with Nick Visconti and Mike Miller a few days ago in the northwest to get going on this whole filming thing. I (bhayes) woke up with a clear outlook and an optimistic view because of endless snow and tons of perfect untapped features...almost. 'Almost' has become the word of the trip, or more so, our mantra whenever we spot something new. 1 section too short for rails, 2 feet too low for this drop, 5 feet too tall for that one. We're gettin' it done though, just takes a little more searching. Here's a few photos about what I mean.

Snowboarder.com just posted a cool vid of some early season riding at June Mountain. June is the sickest place to ride... mellow scene, coolest features to ride, and you never wait in line. If you are thinking of heading down to the Mammoth area definitely hit up June... worth every second.

Thanks to some early season lake effect snow storms the season has started with a bang...

For the first trip of the year we teamed up with Joe Carlino and the TWS crew and got some business handled.

Stephen Blasko stops by via guyChat

Steve Blasko... there is a good chance you aren't familiar with Steve. Before our Autumn Line days, we were making local snow movies in Ohio under the guise Hardwire Productions. One of the crew then was a kid named Steve Blasko.

Blasko was and is a character. Perpetually in school, wearing girls jeans 24/7, always listening to obscure bands no one has ever heard of, and pushing the limits of his snowboarding in his own way. Blasko, Skizzo, Ballsko, Skizm, Blaskizm... or any other of his numerous nicknames, had always done things differently. From bomb drops, to sketchy drop-ins, to odd spots no one else would ride. Steve lived in the upstairs of a funeral home for years until he moved to a loft in hickville usa with 20ft ceilings and a mini ramp inside.. the dudes on his own page.

Blasko isn't trying to be a pro snowboarder, just likes riding crazy stuff and loving snowboarding, which is more then what I can say about of lot of people. He's the guy that in September will tell you "It might snow on friday night.. forecast is showing flurries", just cause he is so amped for the cold. Well Steve decided to grow up a bit this year and got a job on the west coast teaching kids smart people things... He checked in to give us an update.

Ed Herbold is a photograher on the rise outa Colorado. This past winter when Greg Hahn said I should fly into Denver and spend a few days at Red Mountain pass in Colorado, before we headed to Mammoth I was a little skeptical. Colorado is a fun place, but not overly productive from my experience. Well i was kind of right, the snow was trash, but Ed rolled in and made the trip soooo fun. The dude was a chef or something by trade so he always made sure you had good snacks, were having a good time, and were stoked to ride! Ed took us to this amazing zone of pillows called the "Ed Zone", the conditions weren't prime, but they got shredded and Ed even got up and handled business himself.

We're big fans of Ed over here so we invited him into the Autumn Line Internet Cafe to say whats up...

In case you don't know who Jason Kell is I will fill you in...

Jason originally hails from Clarkston, Michigan. A few years back I met Jason at a spring time riding session in Michigan and we were both pumped that we were the only ones there riding Capitas. Jason would end up spending months at a time living on my couch until he made his way out to Truckee, CA. He has been a traveling gypsy ever since, and if you meet him there is a good chance he may end up on your couch that night. If you knew half the stories about Jason Kell... everything from getting in a fight with some jocko at Bear and getting his pass revoked, all the way up to living in a tent in Govy one summer after being exiled from HCSC... you would wish you knew Jason. He is the voice of snowboarding... only his voice isn't coming at you through snowboard videos, magazines, or brands... its most likely coming from your living room.

So i was digging around the CAPiTA archives on their site.. its amazing! They cataloged all their old web videos into archives for our enjoyment.

Back around 2001 or 2002 I went out to Windell's Snowboard Camp to get my shred on, and the first day i was strapped in looking down at the "30 footer", which scared me to death. I was real nervous to hit it and this dude rolls up to me and says "hey man... you hit this thing yet today?" and I said "No", and he says "I wonder if they salted it yet" and then he just takes off and bs360s it with unbelievable style.... rockin jeans and a button up white shirt and crazy black hair... it was Corey Smith.

Corey Smith has been one of my favorite snowboarders ever since and always will be.

Watch this and I hope you enjoy it as much as i do...

Things got a little out of hand with Brett when we showed him some of the local watering holes... and lets just say we didn't get around to working the next day until about noon.

Anyway.. Peter Benchetler arrived fresh off the plane and ready to work.

He was a little sluggish due to a Chicago Airport McDonalds stop, but he powered thru.

This is what the computer saw all day.

Peter was telling us about this band, being really vague... "I found this band, they're an older band that like never really made it big, but their music is awesome. I think they're on a UK label now or something that put their songs out. I think it would be cool for my part." So I googled them and here is what i found... "The *********** were one of those bands that although enjoyed great local success, never really got major national recognition. We have made contact with the band, found all their old recordings and put them out for everyone to enjoy." hahaha... he was spot on.

Well the editing session put us well past 2AM.. so we went out for a late night food run...

Brett came out with Sushi, an Avocado and chips. Weird.

Mark upped the ante with Beer and Yogurt? Weirder.

Peter was smart and got gummy worms.

Hurting for sleep.

We headed back.. and got as many screens going as possible.

These dudes worked really hard this week, and now that they're gone, Adam, Mark, and I get to keep working for the next month. Movie is going to be done June 20th... we hope.

Brett Butcher is in the Building!

Brett arrived Monday evening here in Cleveland, OH to work on his video part.

Well Brett was interneting AND working on his part.

Mark was there.

Adam was there.

I was there... and yes a box of Capita gear just showed up. Get over it, your jealous.

Bretts part is coming along swimmingly. Brett was pushing hard to use a song by a an older band called "Smashmouth", but we just weren't feeling it and ended up with a song by the band "Lit". You are gonna be so pumped to see it!

We took a break from the computers and headed up to a baseball game.

And he apparently wears shades at night to the game.

We're stoked to have Brett out... especially considering he took the worst fall i've ever seen at Superpark a few weeks back and kind of broke his back. Gnarly!

So today we were waiting for some rendering to finish up so we popped in an older Bald Egal movie to check out Jake OE's footage... and low and behold Lance Machado was in it!

Superpark Madness

Mammoth is always a good time... and Superpark in Mammoth is even better.

After a bit of a slow start.. the session went off! The "Son of Beserker" jump as they dubbed it, was handled in serious style. It measured at exactly 100ft to the knuckle, so when the dudes handled it right they were going 120 and up easy. Lonnie Kauk in particular was chucking to the bottom of the landing.

The bottom setup was wild. Choose a takeoff.

Greg was busy checking the Obama/Clinton race all week on his fancy iPhone.

Brett was there... KILLIN IT!

So they had this insanely gnarly hip... dudes were sending it. After like 30 minutes there was a rut forming on the takeoff. Brett sent it a few times, but the last hit he got tossed hard right. On Thursday Scott Blum and I stayed up on the mountain a little late and had a quarterpipe sesh with Pat Bridges himself. Bridges has one of the best handplants in the biz, and the doubles runs with Scott and Pat were really rad. We took last chair off the mountain at 7:00.

The lift ride out was a little sketchy.

Day 1:

Sunny and beautiful... need I say more.

Scott Blum was throwing down on these.

Mammoth's park crew was working double time all day.

Everyone was killing it.. especially Gabe Taylor who was launching deep on the landing of the step down jump. Some people say it was 80ft, others claiming 98 to the knuckle, others said over 100 easy... i'm gonna go with 85, and Gabe went over 100.

We woke up today though for Day 2, and its a little windy.

Its nice here in town, but not up top.

Looks like Siete de Mayo.

Tomorrow will be sick for sure. Cody Rosenthal and I are gonna hit up the Volcom Brothers skatepark today. Be jealous!

The morning started off with good intentions. We were gassed up and ready to roll at 8, and headed out to this really cool zone. Guess we should have known after the first five minutes when all we found was ice and our over-heated-engine lights kept coming on, but we kept on and ended up at the zone.

Group Dynamics. We roll deep.

The whole zone was ice garbage pretty much. We sat there for about 5 minutes and decided to check out a different spot. After a refill at Starbucks, myself, Hammer, Peter, Cody, & photog Kevin Westenbarger headed out.

We hit the jackpot with snow.

Cody wanted to snap a photo, so he gave an action test shot to figure out the Canon Digi delay.

He got it dialed for Peters fs180. Hammer was claiming it was 15ft. He was wrong... by about 30 feet. ha

Hammer dropped first, and powered thru a wild landing. I don't know how on earth he held on to it, the snow right there wasn't that good after all, and when he landed his feet almost came out of his bindings. He powered through like a champ though.

We ended up finding a really rad jump and those dudes threw down.

Business was handled. We had a good day, did some scouting, threw some snowballs, etc. Had some tough weeks of bad weather, but today made up for it.

So yet another day in Sonora, I rolled down there one early morning to meet up with Matt Hammer, Peter Benchetler, and Cody Rosenthal.

So at the trail head cody bust's out a greatly drawn layout of all the sweet jump spots. We decided to check out the "double back flip jump" its not really called that... but it should be now.

After destroying the "double backy jump" we all head out to a near by bowl. We set a gear down and start sledding around, shortly there after we see to sledneckers approaching, we thought. Turns out two be a ranger, and he saw cody and peter sledding with out helmets so it gives them 125 buck tickets each, pretty sweet.

Except the tickets and getting annoyed by the ranger it was a good day, everyone got shots... cody got a banger, youll see.

Sonora Pass... back again.

We rolled in style.

I had been itching to get out and ride my sled, so Greg & Brendan offered to haul myself and my sled out to Sonora. It was about 60 and sunny, and we had a blast. The snow was surprisingly good, so we decided to do a little boarding as well. Robbie Sell laughed at me when I told him we were gonna go sledding at Sonora that day, but boy was he wrong. It was like boarding at Mt. Hood in June.

So the best part about the day happened that night. It was an accident... but R.I.P. Brendan's toothbrush.

Thats it for me... have a nice life.

The next day we went up to June Mountain. June is amazing... its a long lift ride up, but soooo worth it.

Mammoth or Bust

Colorado sent us on our way.... I just thought the Rocky Mountains would have been a little rockier than that.... That John Denvers full of crap man.

Anyway... If you ever make the drive from Colorado to Mammoth you will understand my pain. Just imagine not turning the wheel of your car for 30 minutes straight. Just perfectly straight roads as far as you can see for miles through the desert. When you finally come to a turn it feels insane like you are going in circles. There are a few sweet spots to see on the way though...

We finally made it into Mammoth, and swooped in to grab a slice of the greatest pizza on earth. Next time you are in Mammoth hit up 5 Boroughs... blow your mind delicious. Why do i always talk about food?

Brendan Hayes and I crashed out at basically the HIlton of houses in Mammoth. I don't want to release all my secrets here, but lets just say plasma tv, my own room, and a garage to house my sled. Top notch... Mtv cribs style, literally. We headed up to Chair 4 with Greg Hahn, Cody Rosenthal, Peter Benchetler, & Matt Hammer. Checked out this rad hip, those guys sent a few rounds on it, then Cody took me back to the most epic playground.

Hard to tell from the photo, but there are about 1,000 trees to bonk, jib, ride, jump, tap, etc top to bottom. So siiick! Cody and I did the worlds longest followcam thru it.

You ever have a buddy that charges everything, no matter what the conditions, and always lands something sweet? For me, that buddy is Cody Rosenthal. That kid is so amazing. He was sending it like 25 feet off this hip in a wild windstorm.

"We're There"

So I flew into Colorado. I've been there before, and although its always a fun time there, I wouldn't always call Colorado the most productive place. Be that as is it may, Pat Lynch picked me up at DIA, and we headed to Breckenridge. Greg Hahn & Brendan Hayes made the 14 hour trek from Mammoth to join us.

We met up with our buddy and Sims superstar James Frederick and drove to Red Mountain. If you have never been to Ouray, CO it looks like you just drove through Colorado wasteland and ended up in Europe. The town was crazy.. apparently has the worlds best ice climbing or something too.

Well we headed out and built a few jumps the first day.

Its like a playground out there.

Red Mountain is sick... except its mostly hiking. Thats fine if you dont have a sled or a sled payment... but I wasn't too jazzed up, but we all managed to snowshoe our way around just fine.

We checked out some really cool zones, and found all these cool mining buildings. It was great to see that so many people had decided to carve their "tags" into the building... things like "420" and "Dave & Katie were here", stuff like that. Forget history and all that.. lets let people know what morons we are. Anyway.. pretty cool buildings.

After miles and miles of hiking we all crashed at the hotel. Luckily Ed Herbold the master photographer arrived to lighten the mood. Ed is the master... and rides just as well as he shoots photos.

Red Mountain gave us what it had to offer, but the weather wasn't as cooperative. We changed course and went into the trees.

Yard sale.

This zone was amazing. Tons of pillows, and the coolest thing i've ever seen up close in the backcountry.. an Elk!

Sleep Tight.

Elk tracks. I tried to get the Elk on film, but he had other plans.

We kept moving on down the line, checking out a ton of pillow and cliff zones. We ended up like 3 miles from the vehicles, and were not hyped on walking all the way back. Out of nowhere this lumberjack shows up in a huge truck towing a double sled trailer with only one snowmobile on it. We flagged him down, he gave the 6 of us about 10 seconds to hop on and he hauled us back going like 50mph. It was soooo sketchy, Greg was just sitting on the back of the trailer, inches from death.

Regardless we made it back safe and sound.

Colorado treated us well, but we moved on to California. 14 hour drive... yikes.

California Livin' Part Two: The Calm (and not so calm) After the Storm

So, better late than never, eh? Here's the rest of the story...

After the snow had settled and the sun started shining, Matt Hammer joined up with our previous crew, and we headed out to a well-traveled, well-liked California hot spot. There were crews galore lining up their sleds outside the entrance, but there’s plenty of room for everyone, so we gave a few nods and ‘whats up’s and headed out.

It was a sunny day, the crew was super fun, and to top it off, we got to shoot a jump that, as far as we all could tell, was fresh and new. Greg guinea-pigged the jump (which featured a full-on boardercross style run-in) and came up inches shy of a super-stylie off axis 5-er. So close. But, the ice was broken, and the

We had a blast over the next few days hitting some great spots, but one day led to a little frustration, and ultimately some pretty good laughs. Check this out…

After caching out this amazing rock face, we knew we were close to the trail we wanted, but faced the dilemma of either going back and around the way we came, or adventure up and over the peak we were in front of and catch the trail on the opposite side. We chose the latter.

First of all, Matt went to start his sled, but to no avail. We spent about twenty comical minutes trying to pull-start his clutch manually.

MATT WISHING HIS SLED WAS HAVING A BETTER DAY

Thanks to Peter’s mechanical wizardry, we got ‘er started and boondocked our way through trees, bushes, rocks, etc. and finally reached the highest point. We could see the trail below us, but the plethora of rocks, boulders, steep hills, creeks, and thick trees provided some intimidating barriers.

So, Peter took the first shot and disappeared to find a safe road. Matt followed suit about 10 minutes later. Brendan and I waited at the top, and about 20 minutes later, we spotted the two guys down on the trail at the bottom. They waved their arms back and forth to us, I told Brendan we had the signal, and so we shrugged and headed down.

Dumb.

It may quite literally have ranked top 3 scariest descents you might ever encounter. Exposed rock fields, steep hills, boulders, no real way to brake or slow down safely. Oh, and it ended sharply in a grove of dead trees. Not to mention Peter and Matts’ tracks had hardened into nice little ice chutes.

So we’re creeping down this hill, and Brendan is in front of me, moving a tad slower and dead even with a nice, big boulder. I had 2 choices… Hit my buddy, or hit this rock. I hit the rock.

No damage, but the skis were now straddled on either side of this dumb rock. Brendan had to hike back up and help me drag the sled uphill and turn it. We lifted, we pulled, and we loudly tried to figure out why on earth someone in their right mind would wave us to come down something so ridiculous.

NEVER AGAIN. TRUST ME, IT’S EVEN MORE RIDICULOUS IN PERSON.

We get the sled pointed downhill, Brendan grabs a helmet, revs ‘er up, and heads down. I watch as he goes slowly, then faster, and faster, and faster, and faster, then supermans off the sled just as it dives into the forest grove and lodges under 4 interlocking dead trees. So I head down to the bottom, get my saw out and start slicing away as Peter and Matt make their way over to lend their assistance.

As they approach, I asked them if they had gone on a mission to find the scariest descent possible?

Matt replied “Oh man. I can’t believe you guys went down that! We were waving you to go back the other way!”

Crap. After we took a couple seconds to register what just happened, we laughed, shook our heads, drove the sleds to safety, and ended up having a really great rest of the day. We zipped out to a jump we built the day before, had some fun there, packed up the trucks and headed home, but not before saying ‘what’s up’ to our friends from Mack Dawg People and the Transworld crew, who we spotted amongst the mass exodus. Man, is it a party at that spot!

The rest of the week went smooth as ex-lax (thank you 80’s). A couple more jumps, a couple more shots, and a great week or so wrapped up nicely.

Summer Time Tahoe

Well its been a while since the last storm hit the shores of lake tahoe, after searching for snow that wasnt hot pow we gave up and hit some rails. Me, Brett Butcher and Nick Visconti headed to south lake to hit some well know rails. It was a pretty good day both Brett and Nick got shots.

Hopefully this 50 degree weather ends here and we get some storms rollin through.

California Livin': Part One - The Storm

So for the first time this year, with rail filming all but over, I got to spend a little extended time in California.

I landed in Reno and was greeted by friends, In-N-Out Burger, and some funky dog diarrhea on the floor of the house I crashed at. Gross. Despite the nasty present, the trip kicked off proper.

NOT A GREAT FIRST SIGHT

Brendan Hayes and I rolled down to Mammoth to meet up with Greg Hahn, Matt Hammer, and Peter Benchetler.

DRIVING DOWN SOUTH

After some pizza from 5 Boroughs, a midnight ‘mobiling session, and 4 to 5 feet of new snow, we headed out our first morning to some familiar zones.

The weekend’s blizzard wreaked havoc on the town, and dumped untold amounts of snow (well, I guess I did tell you. Up to 5 feet in some spots) from down in town to the highest elevations… We couldn’t have been more excited.

On the trek out to the spot, I decided to make sure everyone’s muscles were working by burying my sled in the snorkel-worthy fresh stuff several times. The carnage continued as each rider, filmer, and photographer suffered Stuck Sled Syndrome, which any sledneck will tell you is about the equivalent of an NFL workout, only in a giant clown suit with snow up to your knees.

Eventually though, we made it to the zones we were aiming for, and it turned out beautifully. Between Peter, Greg, and Brendan, everyone made use of the airy pillow lines and bagged a couple shots each.

The next day we decided to head back to the mountain to hit some retaining wall on the side of one of the runs. But do to lack of communication and the fact that I could barley walk let alone snowboard, they were already done with the session by the time I got there.

KOREA Part 2

The next day started off good, we had a demo in the park at YongPyong. It was super fun and we got some good shots. After the demo we decided to take the gondola up and take a run. On the way down I hit this little ice bump on the side of the run and it shot me into the side of the mountain and my knee slammed right into a rock. After I got up I checked my knee and it didn't look too bad. On the way down my knee started to feel like it was getting worse and by the time I got to the bottom I lifted up my pants and realized that I had a grapefruit growing out the side of my knee.

"It's not that bad"

I am starting to realize that I need to find a translator quick

So my Korean friends Daniel and Sunny took me to the hospital and translated for me. At the hospital they X-rayed my knee and said that I would be ok, or at lease that is what my translator told me. So they wrap my leg up in a half-cast gave me some cool pants and some crutches, and sent me on my way.

The next day I was cooped up in the hotel room all day while everyone went riding, so I decided to make an edit to pass the time

Cabin Fever

KOREA Part 1

So I got the word that I was being sent to Korea to film with the Signal guys... I was pumped, but my only question was North or South?

Obviously we headed to South Korea.. flying into Seoul to be exact. The only catch was because I had to fly standby and I could not check any bags. Thankfully Hammer brought me a board, but I still had to figure out how to get everything I needed into my carry on bags... including boots and bindings.

12 hours of chasing the sun

Alaska.

I flew through New York, then Tokyo, then Seoul... jetsetting.

Japan.

When I arrived in Korea I was met by my Korean friends, Daniel and Kyle, and they informed me that we were 4 hours away from our destination. So we packed up the car and I started the fourth leg of my journey. Daniel said that he was a good driver and that I could trust him... or at least that is what I thought he said.

Traveling at light speed

Daniel said "Do you want to hear the road sing?" I thought for sure I was misunderstanding him, but he pulled the car off the road and instead of hearing a loud noise to wake up drivers it played "Mary Had A Little Lamb" somehow. I thought to myself, "Where am I?"

When we arrived at the condo my total travel time exceeded 24 hours. Our tour guide Chris told me that I was sleeping in the next room. So I opened the door and saw everyone was passed out on the floor so I passed out in the corner. (Traditional Korean condos don't have beds, only heated floors)

The next morning everyone woke up wondering who was sleeping in the corner. So I introduced myself and we decided to go shred!

The lifies were awesome. They wore funny costumes and the only English they knew was "Hi Friend!"

They had a magic carpet that took you directly to the chair lift

After shredding our tour guide Chris treated us to his favorite snack, fish on a stick

After riding the resort for 9 hours we decided to set up this wallride and session that for another 3 hours.

We ended the day with Korean BBQ

What better way to end an epic day!

Many of you have seen our video series on twsnow.com, "Technicolour Wendesdays", and for those who havent, please check it out.

We appreciate all the feedback we receive on those videos, having posted 3 of them, there are plenty more to come for the rest of the winter and spring months. We have noticed an overwhelming amount of hate response to our latest video, so we thought we'd share some of our favorites with you.

Here are some excerpts from our last "Technicolour Wednesday" featuring Lance Machado, Eric Fernandez, Pat Lynch & Brendan Hayes goofing around in a park in between filming sessions:

At 5:53 PM What?!?!?!?!? said: Dude, these guys aren't "hangin out" riding together and chillin, these guys are trying to produce an image to become popular and get sponsored, its actually quite disgusting, what's with the close up of the dude's face as he's riding by??? are you guysfilming fashion modeling or snowboarding??? there definitely wasn't much of either going on in this flick. This is a sad comment on the state of snowboarding and what its become... I mean go for it, if you want to f******** dress like a gypsy good for you,but if your gonna have a camera on you while you do it you better bring some g** d** thunder on your board or else you look like a fool who's trying to fit in for no reason other than conformity to the nonconformist method. Don't hurt our eyes with this trash anymore,

p.s. shame on you transworld for putting this garbage on your website.

Although it seemed like a simple concept that people would understand these videos are not meant to be teasers or banger shots, simply internet content to kill some time with and enjoy. But sadly, for those who hate it doesn't matter, there is no stopping them...

Hating is everywhere!

Its exciting to see kids putting energy and effort into snowboarding, whether it be hating or not. In light of all this we are happy to let you know that from here on out with each "Technicolour Wednesday" we post, we will also post our TOP 5 favorite comments that week, good or bad.
